2001 4-10 October Hurricane Iris North Atlantic Classic conventional tropical cyclone lifecycle. [AVN analysis only occasionally had a closed circulation and so its unrealistic portrayal is not shown here.] NOGAPS: Image Anim

2001 10-15 October Hurricane Karen North Atlantic Classic case of the conversion of a subtropical cyclone into a tropical cyclone as illustrated by the "upward" growth of the warm-core thermal wind signal (-VTL and -VTU) to the tropopause while the thermal asymmetry (B) of the cyclone decreases simultaneously. An enhanced version of this evolution is given by Olga later the same year. AVN:        Image Anim

Hurricane Michelle North Atlantic Intense hurricane that undergoes extratropical transition at 30oN. Substantial period as a hybrid warm-secluded extratropical cyclone is well-analyzed by the phase diagrams. AVN:        Image Anim

2001 22 November-
5 December
Hurricane Olga North Atlantic Classic case of the conversion of a weak extratropical cyclone (-VT negative on 22ND and 23RD)...into a subtropical cyclone as the warm core develops and builds upward (-VTL becomes positive on 24TH). The subtropical cyclone then converts to a tropical cyclone (-VTU becomes positive on 25TH), before dissipation as a weak shallow warm-core low in early December. AVN:        Image Anim
